Bukit Panjang town will get a $93 million facelift over the next 5 years in which 8 main projects will be carried out to improve the area.

These include a sports complex, a new primary school and lift upgrading for about 30 blocks of flats.

Meantime, an upgrading project has been completed - the extension of Petir Road.

With the official opening of the Petir Road extension on Sunday, traffic flows are expected to improve in and around Bukit Panjang.

Another project will see the extension of Senja Road, which will further reduce congestion there.

Discussions are also ongoing with bus companies to improve public transport in the area.

Residents can also look forward to more shelters in the form of covered linkways and drop-off points for school buses.

Recreational facilities will also be added, together with landscaping works to beautify Bukit Panjang town.

Minister Lim Swee Say, who was at the Petir Road extension opening ceremony, also said Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, who is now in Jurong GRC, will be in his team contesting the new Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

The others are Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and new candidates Liang Eng Hwa and Christopher James De Souza.

Mr Lim said: "We think this is a good line-up, because given our different backgrounds, different age groups, different religious groups, racial groups, I think we should be able to reach out to all aspects of our residents."

Mr Lim added that Dr Teo Ho Pin will stand in the new single ward of Bukit Panjang while Gan Kim Yong will contest Choa Chu Kang.

Over at Bedok Reservoir Road, another upgrading project was completed.

After more than 18 months, residents can now shop and eat at their brand new wet market.

It was officially opened by MP for Aljunied GRC George Yeo who said that it was a happy day for all residents.

He said: "This is a very happy day, because the old market was really old, and then there was a fire a few years ago. Now, we have moved into the refurbished new market and it looks wonderful. It is airy, it is bright, people are happy and business is good."

Rebuilt at a cost of some $8 million, there are now more than a hundred stalls and improved facilities, like new eating areas and access for the handicaps. - CNA/ir
