Smith Street Food Centre to be closed for upgrading
By Sharon See, Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE: The 23-year-old food centre at Smith Street is getting a major facelift.

It will be closed from July 1, for a year and a half, for improvements to both the facade and the interior, and when completed in December 2007, the National Environment Agency says the new hawker centre will boast of an architecture that complements its surrounding theme and ambience.

Located in the heart of Chinatown, the new hawker centre will have features that include a majestic entrance to bring back memories of Smith Street when it was popularly known as Hei Yuen Kai meaning the Theatre Street.

Balcony like extensions, reminiscent of the early design features of the shop houses will also be installed on the second storey.

To make way for the upgrading, more than half of the stalls will be moved to a temporary site along Outram Road. - CNA /dt
