Developer Far East Organisation is promising to build the tallest retail-only development in Singapore called Orchard Central.
The project will be located at the Glutton's Square site, along Somerset.
It will boast 10-storeys and two basements. Yielding some 290,000 square feet of retail space, it will be even bigger than the Ngee Ann City retail mall.
By the second half of 2008, the two ends of the Orchard Road strip will be fully transformed.
At the one end, Orchard Turn will welcome Christmas shoppers to its mega-mall. And over at Somerset, Orchard Central will tantalise customers with a new retail experience.
Apart from being Singapore's tallest retail mall, it is also promising to house new brands to inject freshness into the retail scene.
And as Glutton's Square is synonymous with food, the roof-top will become a food paradise.
A linkway called the "discovery walk" will link Orchard Central with Specialists' Shopping Centre and the Somerset Central site.
The announcement comes one day after CapitaCommercial Trust and CapitaMall Trust announced plans to increase the retail space at Raffles City by almost 60%.
And Far East is meeting the competition head on.
It also has plans to enhance some of its existing retail malls.
Far East says it's looking to maximise space in about four of its malls, which is about a quarter of its retail portfolio.
They include Riverside Point, Ginza Plaza, Lucky Chinatown and Pacific Plaza.
Citing Riverside Point, Far East says now is an opportune time because of the new found vibrancy in the Clarke Quay area.
