More care needed when carrying out construction work near historical sites

Letter from Jayandran Sandra Alison

I refer to the letter "Heritage needs better protection" (Sept 1). I was dismayed to hear that the Land Transport Authority (LTA), while building the Circle Line, had accidentally demolished part of the railings and wall of the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd.

Every day, I would drive by the heavy construction work taking place outside and beside the old St Joseph's Institution (now the Art Museum) as well as the Cathedral, and remark to my husband that it was a matter of time before something happened either structurally or otherwise.

These historic buildings are one of a kind and cannot be truly replaced once damaged. Although the LTA is reportedly going to put back the portions of the wall and railings that were removed, I doubt it would be able to re-build or repair either of these beautiful old dames, should anything happen to them structurally.

Perhaps the LTA could shed some light on how these works are taking place without disturbing the historic buildings within the Civic District.
