She used her flat to con housing agents

IT seemed the pregnant woman didn't stop with adoption agencies.

For the last three months, a tenant who rents a room from her husband has had to handle a stream of housing agents coming to the flat.

The pregnant woman's husband is a hawker who works long hours and was not around when they turned up.

He lives there with their 10-year-old daughter.

The tenant, a 40-year-old divorcee who moved in with her two young sons in May, said she has had enough of it and will be moving to a new place within the next month or so.

She declined to give her name and said in Mandarin: 'Every time a shadow flashes under the crack of the front door, my heart will start to pound.

KEYS TO FLAT

'I don't know who will come knocking and telling me that I have to move out because the landlord has let the place out.

'It's scary because some of them said they have keys to the flat.'

The hawker, 40, said he had never approached any agents to sell or find new tenants for the flat.

He said he doesn't know where his wife is staying or how he can get in touch with her.

And he is not the father of her child.

'My wife moved out more than two years ago,' he said.

'We can't sell the flat yet as we're still finalising the divorce.

'Why would I want to rent out the flat when I already have a tenant?'

He said their divorce will be finalised by the end of this year.

According to the tenant, at least eight housing agents have come with keys, saying they had been 'contracted' by the pregnant woman to sell or rent the flat.

She said: 'They use the keys on the main door, thinking the keys will work or that there's no one at home.

'But the keys don't fit the keyhole because they're not the real ones.

'I'm at home most of the time, so can you imagine how frightening it is to hear someone fiddling with the lock?

'It's like loan sharks are at the door!'

Apparently some of the housing agents had also handed the pregnant woman money, which they may have hoped to get back when a tenant or buyer was found.

According to the tenant, they told her they had given the woman varying amounts, between $200 and $1,800, when she handed over the 'house keys'.

It is understood that one of them has also made a police report. Several medical bills from hospitals and clinics, amounting to more than $2,000, addressed to the pregnant woman, have also arrived there, the tenant said.

'I'm so afraid that I don't dare to open the door now.

'All I want to do is to move to my new place soon,' she said.
