Should buyers pay agents who don't represent them? Tuesday August 29, 2006 Letter from Chiam Moi Leng ONE way for buyers to source for a resale flat is through the classified pages of newspapers. They will then contact the agents representing the sellers. Currently, buyers who ultimately agree to buy the house are required to pay commission to the agents. Why is this, when the buyers are not represented by the agents? Can agents choose not to entertain buyers if the latter are reluctant to pay commission? In many situations, buyers make their own arrangements to view the places and some are even prepared to process the documentation work for the transaction themselves. Where buyers are able to handle the paperwork themselves and do not wish to engage the services of agents, should commissions still be payable? I hope the relevant agencies can enlighten us. | |
