| Up in arms over uprooting Wednesday ? September 27, 2006 Letter from S Vedha Giri I REFER to Mr C S Sriram's letter, "Rising rents, vexed tenants" (Sept 22). He is bang on target. I have been staying in Singapore since 2003 and I have never seen rents so high. This kind of sudden increase defies logic and is partly due to less-than-ethical tactics deployed by the agents ? such as turning a house viewing into an auction, as Mr Sriram mentioned. One important issue that needs attention is how owners are playing havoc with tenants' lives, by putting their properties on the market for rent and forcing the existing tenants to look for another home at short notice. Tenants have families. Their children go to school and have friends in the area in which they live. Making them search for a new house suddenly is like pulling the rug from under their feet. Owners need to place themselves in tenants' shoes and have some consideration for the hardship they are causing. Would any owner like being made to move every year? | |
