SINGAPORE : Two developers have already applied for the government's lighting incentives.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has received two formal applications since the incentives were announced in March this year.

One of them has already been granted approval.

Under the lighting incentive plan, developers and building owners will be given a grant that covers at least half of the installation costs.

The government has set aside at least $10 million for this purpose.

Although it's early days yet, the response is heartening and the government has invited the private sector to join hands to make Singapore vibrant.

"Work with us. I would say that the value that we create together would benefit the private property owners as well. If Singapore becomes a much more beautiful place, it would definitely raise the value of the city. And I think private property owners should also view it from that perspective that the value of the property will increase as the buildings look more beautiful," says Minister of State, National Development Grace Fu.

The new plan for the city centre aims to light up key areas like Orchard Road, Singapore River, Bras Basah, Bugis, the Central Business District and Marina Bay.

The URA is holding a three-month exhibition at the URA Centre Atrium from November 22 till February next year to explain its plan to the public.

But for those who want more than concepts, the year-end festivities at Orchard Road will provide an inkling as to what to expect.

Bideford Junction will be the first pilot project to showcase what can be expected when plans to light up the city takes off. - CNA /ls
