State-of-the-art mall: Artist's impression of the $80m e!Hub which will be fronted by a 30-m-high tower, with a 25-m-tall ferris wheel mounted on the inside of the building |
To cost $80 million, the 24-hour entertainment complex will chase the youth and family markets. NTUC Club, which manages the mall, says it will seek tenants willing to open through the night.
e!Hub will feature an NTUC Fairprice supermarket as well as a Cathay Cineplex with six halls and seating capacity of 1,000. It will also house a 32-lane bowling alley and a host of trendy retail as well as F&B outlets.
NTUC Club also said yesterday that talks are under way with a major Japanese corporation to jointly develop a new entertainment concept for youth, much like the huge Joypolis entertainment complex in Osaka, Japan. 'If this materialises, it will be the first of its kind in Singapore,' NTUC Club said.
Physically, the new building will also be an architectural first in Singapore, says NTUC Club. e!Hub will be fronted by a 30-metre-high tower, with a 25-metre-tall ferris wheel mounted on the inside of the building.
The 200,000 square-feet mall will be spread over four storeys. It will take over the former Pasir Ris Bowl and covered carpark area within Downtown East.
'Some have asked me how the upcoming integrated resorts with world-class theme parks will affect Downtown East,' said NTUC Secretary-General Lim Boon Heng who officiated at the e!Hub foundation laying ceremony yesterday.
'Will it be a 800-pound gorilla on steroids that will deal Downtown East a pulverising blow? I think Downtown East will continue to be very relevant to our members and Singaporeans, so long as we continue to innovate and re-invent our entertainment concepts.
'Downtown East aims to serve Singaporeans, while the integrated resorts aim to serve global customers. So Downtown East will continue to serve as a social leveller, so that our workers can enjoy world-class facilities at local prices,' said Mr Lim, who is also NTUC Club chairman.
