Front-door flyers bad news Looking for action or prevention Wednesday August 23, 2006 Letter from Tang Ee Ket I wonder how many HDB residents are upset with the distribution of advertising brochures? Ad stickers are glued to door bells, lifts, riser room doors, stairwells, corridors and letter boxes. Ugly stains remain even after careful removal. Another common practice is to stick the brochure into the front gate, an action that sometimes springs open an unlocked gate. With the enhanced "lockable" feature of HDB letterboxes denying access to junk mail, most advertisers choose to stick their brochures into residents' front gates or leave them in the doorway. If left to accumulate, they pose a security threat as their presence indicates no one is at home. At the same time, they are a fire hazard. One such advertiser is Cisco. Its brochure hints that without a proper security system, HDB homes are easy burglary targets. Yet, the Cisco brochure itself, stuck into the front gate, attracts unwanted attention. If we are able to say "no" to distributors of pamphlets at malls or MRT stations, why can't we do the same with advertising on our very doorstep? Is there any law that makes such advertising illegal and liable to a fine? Can we put up signs at our doorways indicating our preference not to receive junk ads? Are there opt-out procedures or advice the authorities can offer? There are more than 870,000 flats under HDB management. Can HDB curb these advertisers? It is an offence to put up ads at bus stops except on designated boards. Why can't HDB implement a similar practice? | |
